SoulTourist

• So, who is Soultourist?

Soultourist is a project by Ron Shiller, Tobi Foster, Philippe Wüger and Pascal Dubach from Zurich. While Ron Shiller is DJing in various clubs, the other members also run their own solo projects as Foster, Thabo and Big Clap.

• Tell us more about your musical journey? What lead to you taking that route than anything else?

Through listening and collecting records for many years, we all got interested in the process of making music ourselves. Some of us started to play instruments and later moved on to using more electronic equipment. Today our productions contain all these influences. While the computer is the main production tool, we always like to involve lots of samples and analogue instruments.

• Clearly this was all spawned from a love of music. What does music mean to you?

Ooph… hard question. Next one please.

• How did you get into the whole music scene? Is it as glamorous as most people tend to think it is?

We started doing music to satisfy ourselves. It was never a question of belonging to a certain scene. If other people like our stuff as well, this is great, but it shouldn’t be the most important thing. We sure don’t feel like being part of a glamorous scene, but it ‘s always nice to stay in contact with like-minded people… and it’s great that you meet these people in many parts of the world.

• Is the entertainment industry your only source of income. Are there any other ventures that you are involved in?

Making music for us is mostly about having a good time. We try to keep the business-part very low. We all have regular jobs to make our living and we do music only when we find time and feel like it.

• Which genre of music do you specialize in and which is your personal favourite?

We mainly produce records to be played in the club. But our musical interests range through various styles: house, techno, disco, hip hop, 80’s r’n’b, new wave and synth pop, to name a few. Each one of us has a slightly different musical background, and the combination of these influences is what ends up in our productions.

• How do you get music?

We get to music from all possible sources: from record stores and flea markets to downloads and friends.

• What’s the biggest gig you’ve ever performed at? What would be your ultimate gig?

Playing at GOA in Madrid was certainly a cool experience. The best thing is always to party with your friends.

• Did you always know you’d end up where you are today?

We never had a plan of how things should turn out regarding Soultourist. We just did what we liked.

• Are you interested in any collaborations with artists in South Africa?

Why not?

• Given your insight into what’s fresh on the music scene, what do you think the trend for next season will be? Who do you regard (aside from yourself) as a producer that’s making strides in the industry?

There are a lot of good producers out there. We think that the most interesting people are those who don’t follow any trends, but explore new sounds and do their own thing.

• How may budding producers or DJs get in touch with you should they be interested in working with you?

Just drop us a message on our website… http://www.soultourist.com
