DJ Hypnosis

1). Who is DJ Hypnosis and where are you from?

DJ Hypnosis is a 26 year old guy, biologically drawn - Osman Mkhondo, born in Hammanskraal and still based in Pretoria.

2). How and when did you get into the whole music scene? Which one do you prefer; DJ-ing or Production?

It was not by accident, I’ve always had toy pianos when I grew up, recording in stereos and stuff. But the break-through was during my tertiary days in Mafikeng in 2001; when a friend from Botswana introduced me to Fruity Loops.

I prefer the Studio (Production) but I love the crowd scene still.

3). Clearly this was all spawned from a love of music. What does music mean to you?

Look, music has many dimensions, to me it’s just a universal language that enables all nations to communicate and get the same understanding.

4). Which genre of music do you specialise in and which is your personal favourite?

I don’t have a speciality. I produce close to 6 Genres, but people choose to perceive me as a good House producer… (Most people don’t know that I even produce for Motswako guys and other Hip hop gurus).

5). Tell us more about your musical journey? What lead to you taking that route than anything else?

It’s still an argument that music is a calling; you will never run away from it.

For me; I was just attacked by the same bug that eventually led me to this day now. I started with small labels like Loop Masters (They produced the hit track “My Lady Soul”), that eventually led me to Major labels here in SA until now, where I work with international labels.

6). Your sound is fresh and clean. What’s your though process when making a track. Is it inspired by a feeling or do you just make the music according to a brief?

It’s the soul that I put in, nothing special. Music is unpredictable; you can’t wake up and say you are going to make a good song, you have to feel something within you to push you. I try not to use sounds that come standard with software; I collect a lot of sounds.

7). How do you manage to juggle being a DJ and Producer? Do you still find the time to relax? What about time with family and friends – How do you manage that?

I get to be in studio from Monday to Thursday, Friday to Sunday is the Gigs, I rarely get time to rock with my family, but they understand now. I’m not suffering at all; I love it.

8). what’s the biggest gig you ever played? What would be your ultimate gig?

The North West University Fresher’s ball.

Ultimate gig… Miami Music Conference!!! 

9). Give us a breakdown a day or night in the life of Hypnosis? What’s your daily routine? What’s the preparation like, leading up to the event, and what happens afterwards? What kind of food do you eat?

Wake Up at 6AM (after sleeping at 2AM) during the week, breakfast and bath, check my emails and social network messages (I don’t listen to radio nor watch TV), then listen to the previous night’s material, then I visit my diary (personal organiser) to see what’s lined up for the day and then tackle them one at a time.

Junk Food

10). Is the entertainment industry your only source of income. Are there any other ventures that you are involved in?

I am 100% in music.

11). Given your insight into what’s hot on the urban dance scene, what do you think the trend for this year will be? And has the economic climate affected your pocket and how?

Economy has not affected me. I just love doing the music.

The scene is ok, but cramped lately by the new guys with the same sounds and monotonous elements (but hey, everyone is entitled to do their own thing).

12). How many groupies do you get?

I don’t notice… wait! What are groupies again? 

13). Have you had any awkward moments with fans? Have you performed at an event that made you go ”WTF???”

Of course, every DJ has experiences that are like…Yoh! But it’s for me to know and for you not to write about it. LOL

14). Did you always know you’d end up where you are today? Do you have any qualifications under your belt for any studies you may have completed?

I did an Accounting Degree (Trust me, I hated it).

I’ve always had faith in myself, but now God is just giving me more than I expected. 

15). You’ve achieved so much as your tracks are getting featured on a few compilations and we’re quite sure a lot to come. Are you happy with what you have achieved so far? What’s in store from Hypnosis? What aspirations do you have?

I’m happy, but I would love to see my profile hitting 40 Pages (of projects only) before I reach the age of 30.

Well I’m currently working on:
• Malankane’s Album,
• My album (The Music & Legacy),
• Mafikizolo’s Theo remixes,
• Stephanie Cooke remixes (Monthly).

I just dropped something in Music Box4 by Terance, I’m dropping a gospel artist Frans Nkoe, I have a project with the twins called Encrediblez (Supa Hot), and I have EPs monthly on traxsource.com & Afrodesiamp3.com.

There’s just a lot to do, DJ Sox, Mo Flava, Notshi with DJ Lemonka, Casper (Motswako guys), etc

16). Do you work better alone or collaborating? What artists, producers or DJs would you like to collaborate with?

I love being alone, as I have some trade secrets. I have never worked hand in hand with another producer 100%; I would give my Digital Piano for free just to make one track with Dr Dre.

17). Who do you regard (aside from yourself) as a producer that’s making strides in the industry?

Black Coffee… Done!

18). What programs do you use? Is there a secret to the sound you make?

Logic, Pro-Tools, Cubase, Reason.
Yes, but if i tell… it won’t be a secret anymore will it? LOL!!!
