Meet the team…

Nozi M

I was born in the quiet city of Pietermaritzburg - the oldest of three girls. My entire family still resides in Pietermaritzburg although my siblings have relocated to Durban to pursue their studies. I group up in tight-knit family best described as strict, conservative but overflowing with love.

I went through primary and secondary school in Pietermaritzburg with numerous academic, extra-curricular and sporting accolades throughout the 12 years of schooling. Those close to me described me as an all-rounder, a pioneer, and the “crazy fearless one!”.

I fell in love with the art of self-expression in high school in my debating and public speaking societies. I entered every debating and public speaking competition I could access and quickly my team topped the Debating League in our circuit and the Public Speaking awards started to fill my mother’s dining room cabinet.

My most memorable moment that came as a result of having the “gift of the gab” came when I was in grade 11 when I made it through to the National Public Speaking Finals in Johannesburg. Although I had been to Johannesburg before, I had never flown there; in fact I had never flown in my life! At that moment I felt as if I was having an “a-ha!” moment – I knew that I had a God-given talent to speak and I had to find a way to use it.

I moved to the capital city in 2003 to start my tertiary education at the Tukkies (University of Pretoria) undertaking a degree in Political Science majoring in International Relations. I loved university from day one! The sense of independence from my conservative family was nothing short of exhilarating!
In 2006 I decided to continue and pursue an Honours degree at Tukkies. In the midst of that I was blessed with an internship at the Presidency in the Private Office of the Deputy President! I was elated and not prepared for the momentous changes in my life this blessing would bring. I immediately began travelling around the world and today I think I’ve been to over twenty countries! Somehow in that hectic schedule; I managed to complete my studies and get a prominent post in the Presidency as Social Researcher.

Nine months into my Social Researcher post I was offered a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom, off I went to the University of London. I took a sabbatical and pursued a Masters Degree in International Studies and Diplomacy. I shared a house with a fantastic group of young people from all corners of the globe (Ukraine, USA, Britain, Kenya, and South Korea). This was a year of growth for me more than anything else. London is such a cosmopolitan city that it’s difficult to return to South Africa without a changed perspective on race, culture and tolerance.

I got back to South Africa in 2008 and resumed my duties at The Presidency. Before long I was requested to help the Former Deputy President, Mlambo-Ngcuka, to set up an educational foundation. I now head the Umlambo Foundation as General Manager. This is a truly unique place to be professionally – its being at the grassroots in efforts to improve the quality of education in South Africa, but also positioned in such a way that one is exposed to the top tier of government that has an influence on the making and implementation of public policy.

Two months into the post at Umlambo Foundation I was blessed with an opportunity to participate in an professional exchange programme in the Mayor’s Office in Washington DC, USA for two months. I arrived in Washington two days after President Obama was sworn into office – the ambience of the people and the city was so hopeful and positive it really rubbed off onto me. I have a serious collection of Obama t-shirts with the “Yes We Can” slogan all over them! I walked pass the White House on my way to work every day crossing my fingers that I’d catch a glimpse of the First Family.

So how did the radio gig come about? I met 93.8fm’s former station manager at a public speaking engagement where I was presenting a speech. He was immediately taken by my ability to articulate and express myself and invited me as a guest on his show…and the rest is history!

So far, I have reserved myself to learning the ins and outs of radio, working religiously on content production, and doing my little bit to keep the show relevant, sexy, flirty, and fun. The guys are fantastic and never fail to make my weekend!

Nnusi

My name is Nnusi Gazi and I was bred in Rustenburg. Having lived there for over 18 years; I can safely say that I am a proud Rustenburg child. I was raised by my aunt and her husband after my mother passed away and my dad became involved in politics and the struggle - he stayed in exile.

I attend my school in Rustenburg - starting at LD Matshego. This was the most important part of my life, as I was learning the basics of life and this is where it all began for me. After primary school I went to attend my middle school at Kgatseng Middle and I must say that this is the place where I discovered so much about myself. I started doing public speaking and drama during that time. The biggest event I ever hosted as a student was being the MC at the Readathon event in standard 6 (grade 8) - That was the biggest event at that time in any child’s life.

Upon moving to high school (HF Tlou High School) - I still pursued the dreams that I had and continued to do music (amongst the things that I was also doing). HF Tlou was (and still is) one of the best schools in the North West province - there I got involved in sports and was awarded the privilege and honor of being me.

I then studied Computer Sciences at Vaal University of Technology. I also started getting involved in philanthropy work as a student and upon completion; my previous high school employed me as a database administrator as well as a tutor. After a wonderful year spent there, I figured it was time I went into the mining business and I started working for a mining company and me being the curious me, I did everything from underground to the top.

In doing that I learnt a lot from the people that I worked with. I decided that I needed a new challenge after spending over two and a half years at the mines. I went to Cape Town for leave amongst other things (don’t ask me what) and I fell in love with the place… I decided to relocate there.

After spending a good two weeks in Cape Town; I was convinced that it was the place where I was headed. I went back, resigned and moved to Cape Town. When I got there I worked for Brandhouse and then later moved to a company from Australia called iiNet. I had the best time there - especially when I started learning about other cultures and what happens in other countries.

How radio came about was not really a mystery because I have always loved radio and TV; however I never thought I’d be doing radio today. I had a teacher in high school that worked in radio and half the time I would be repeating the things he said or did and I also tried to sound like him. I started listening to radio from an early age and the people that really inspire(d) me are Thabo Moloi, Justice Ramohlola, Bertha Charuma, Fresh, the late Khabzela, Mpho Maboi and of course Thomas Msengana, Lupi Ngcayisa and BBK.

Every time I was in Jhb; I used to come and see the Breakfast With Thomas crew on Metro FM. What a great and amazing experience that was. It inspired and motivated me to do well and be on radio.

Last year, I took the bull by the horn and decided that it was time I got into radio. By being very persistent and determined; I finally got the break. The first show that I did was called The Sports Round Up with Trevor Boqo - who taught me so much; especially the technical stuff with the guidance of the former station and programmes manager at 93.8fm.

When I was asked to stand in on the breakfast show, I wasn’t expecting to walk in those big shoes and its all thanks to the most gifted guys I have been blessed to work with – Nozi M and Thabo are great at what they do and I couldn’t have asked for a better team than them. All I can wish for all us is greater height and the best things.

Thabo

Thabo ‘Tee’ Mokoka originally from the North West Province; Rustenburg to be precise. Like any other youngster ko kasi (Mogwase Zone 5 South) I played street football (2 ‘pal’). I then went to Meridian College in Rustenburg, met some few friends - who introduced me to cricket and although we could not understand some of the cricket jargon like ‘LBW’; it was fun. So the love of sports grew in me there and soon i was the soccer captain.

My passion for sport has always been there, but then now and then i will imitate radio ads and then look at myself in the mirror. This was when Radio Mmabatho was still huge – listening to broadcasting legends like Cebo Maanyapelo, Martin Lock, Mark Gleeson and Dan Setshedi. That’s when i knew that broadcasting was my true passion.

After completing Matric in 2001; I moved up to Johannesburg started my tertiary studies at University of Johannesburg. This is when I met a friend of mine – Gaby; who is a part time musician. We searched around and joined DJ’s casting agency. So while i was studying, I would go for auditions and late afternoon classes.

I would also go to the SABC studios and stand outside Metro FM studios - to try and catch Robert Marawa. I eventually i did - he gave me some few tips and organised me a tour to see the production of MTN Soccer Zone. From there i went to Orange Groove to record my sports demo disc. I started knocking on some few radio stations to make drop offs unfortunately nothing came out of that. I kept on hassling (at all hours) until one Saturday morning i met a guy at Campus Square and after a few chats i said to him: ‘I want to be on radio’ he told me his name was Fahim from Lotus FM. He invited me to his show and i got my voice on air. From there we became friends and so the passion lived on.

After completing my studies; I worked at Nike SA as a Business Analyst - which also enhanced my love for sport; because of the company culture and the type of business.
I polished up my demo and i remember travelling to Tembisa and Alexandra, searched for the local radio stations and submitted my demos. In 2009 a friend of mine, Thato Mushi, told me about 93.8fm. I set up a meeting with the then program manager JB and did the auditions on the spot. So if i was not at work (Nike); I would go and sit with JB in the studio – to see how the desk operates and I eventually got a chance to do sports.

The rest is history… I’m enjoying my hectic work and radio life. I’ve got a fantastic team for the “Weekend Wake up Breakfast show“: Nnusi and Nozi M. These guys really rock! I am loving a every minute of it and enjoying the opportunity that has came my way.

From the team: we would like to thank station management led by Steve Milosovich because if it wasn’t for them none of us would be here, their faith in us has really been amazing as they took a risk and trusted us with such a big responsibility of waking the whole of Midrand and surrounding areas up on Saturdays.

To Kgosi who makes our lives very easy with content production as well as Delani who allows us to go out and mingle with his gig guides on a weekly basis and most importantly the thousands that wake up every single Saturday. Without you there is no us.

Keep on listening to the Saturday’s “Weekend Wake up Breakfast show“… from the pitch side - keep the ball rolling.
